MPA03 Actuators

MPA02R68 Actuators

• The MPA02R68 Actuator is a low torque version of the MPA02 Actuator. This actuator has been designed for use with the smallest of metering valves and needle valves

• By combining a MPA02R68 Actuator with the smallest of needle valves, flow rates previously not possible to control are now achieved

Cosmos Nickel Project
Cyanide Addition

The Xstrata Cosmos Nickel Project (formerly Jubilee Minerals) approached Instrowest in 2007 to help them find a solution to their chemical dosing problem. The problem involved dosing sodium cyanide to the flotation circuit to aid the rejection of arsenic present in the ore.

Due to the small dosing rates required, typically 0 - 150 ml/min, and the tendency for sodium cyanide to crystallize in changing temperatures, Cosmos found a solution could not easily be sourced.

Instrowest presented Cosmos with a proposal to use HanbayMPA02 Actuators and Swagelok Metering valves on a pressurized ring main.

The low flow co-efficient of these valves enabled the small flow setpoint to be controlled accurately and reliably.

Since the initial trial installation, Instrowest has installed another two dosing points and there has been no failure of the actuators to date. As a result of this project’s success, Cosmos now has greater control over the cyanide dosing system, leading to better arsenic rejection and efficiency in their cyanide usage.

Measuring Low Flow Rates Accurately

One challenge in controlling small flow rates is being able to accurately measure the flow. If accurate flow measurement is not achieved then accurate control will not be possible. Instrowest recommends that clients check that their flow transmitters are correctly sized to enable accurate measurement. One common problem that Instrowest has encountered is flow tubes fitted to suit the pipe size rather than the desired flow rate. An oversized flow tube can develop a coating of scale, leading to poor flow measurement and overdosing.

Instrowest recommends Yokogawa AXF flow transmitters for use with reagent dosing. These transmitters are robust in their design and come with a large selection of wetted materials to suit the reagent being used.

Advantages of the Yokogawa AXF flow transmitter are their range of small sizes, including 2.5mm and 5mm flow tubes, their ability to detect electrode adhesion levels, plus other features. Instrowest can supply install and commission a Yokogawa flow tube to suit your application.
